What does it mean to Bend Backwards and why is it so important to our Asana practice? How can we overcome our fears and negative thought patterns so we can progress into the future from a place of fearless compassion.
Back bending gives us direct access to the Anahata Chakra (our heart centre) and to the Karmic relationships of others that have hurt us. Accessing our heart and remembering these relationships can bring out an immense whirpool of emotions, especially those of negativity, resentment, jealousy and fear, all of which can be very hard to release and overcome.
When fear becomes habitual, as it is for most of us in our culture going backwards can seem very scary and very difficult, But with intelligent and consistent practice of backbends over time our hearts are released of negative emotions and we experience less fear and less hesitation. Sometimes It takes going backwards and facing past challenges to be able to progress foward and into our future with a heart full of kindness and compassion.
